Pedestrians versus cars: what to do if you’re in an accident

A pedestrian’s right of way does not always guarantee safety. Drivers and pedestrians alike do not always pay attention and they can misunderstand a road sign or hand gesture. While both parties often try to follow the rules and avoid accidents, accidents do still happen.

Colorado has seen an increase in auto accidents involving pedestrians. Some of the most recent resulted in serious injuries and a fatality. While these are extreme cases, there are still risks of smaller incidents that could cause injuries.

Remain calm

The adrenaline from an accident, even a minor one, can cause a wave of emotions while potentially masking any injuries you could have sustained. If you can move, get to a safe location as quickly as possible to prevent further injury or hold up any traffic. Additionally, you want to avoid accepting fault for the accident.

Call the police

Calling the police can make a major difference in your case. Even if you believe you are fine, you still want the police to be involved. Filing a report can be important, especially if you realize later that you have been injured.

Keep all parties at the scene

Ask the driver and any witnesses to stay until the police have come to take a report. Be patient as it may take some time for the police to arrive. This can be crucial to the case, especially if the accident was not your fault. While waiting, you can collect important information such as the driver’s insurance and take photos of the accident scene, your injuries and any damage to involved vehicles. If the driver does not stay, taking mental notes about the description of the car, or taking photos if you are able to can help the police potentially find him or her.

Acting quickly after an accident and taking the proper steps could benefit you, especially if you need to seek medical attention. Staying as calm as possible and working with the police can help you avoid any mistakes so you can file an insurance claim or obtain any other assistance you may need because of the accident.
